Judge Carl Nichols — Trump appointee, D.D.C. — froze USPS’s August mail-ballot rule late Sunday. Plaintiffs include the DNC, Schumer, Jeffries, NAACP, and LULAC.

Nichols: “The key portions of the Rule exceed any conception of the outer bounds of these authorities.” He said skipping an injunction risked valid absentee ballots going uncounted in November.

The rule grew out of Trump’s March EO: upload voter lists and use approved barcodes or USPS will not mail the ballots. Judge Indira Talwani already blocked parts of it. DOJ asked the Supreme Court to lift her order. Nichols’s freeze is broader.

DHS proposed ending the 2017 60-day grace period. H-1B, L-1, O-1, TN, E, and H-1B1 workers — plus dependents — would fall out of status the day after the job ends.

Agency line: restore a “direct relationship” between status and the job that justified admission. It “assumes” firms would hire equally qualified U.S. workers or file a new I-129.

About 3,800 workers a year use the window; 200,000-plus spouses and children ride that status. Two-month public comment starts with Friday’s Federal Register notice. Proposal, not a final rule.

Jai Halai and Monday-Malachi Rosenfeld were convicted of criminal damage at London’s National Gallery. Sentence: community service, not jail.

On Oct. 9, 2024 they taped a Gaza mother-and-child poster over the glass on Picasso’s 1901 Motherhood and poured red water-based paint on the floor.

Judge David Tomlinson: they did not try to damage the painting or its cover. He cited their ages — early twenties. They shouted the UK was “complicit in genocide.” Youth Demand is a Just Stop Oil offshoot. The gallery said the floor, not the canvas, took the cost.

Former San Francisco immigration judge Chloe Dillon sued DOJ. She says she was fired in August 2025 — about 48 hours after emailing her supervisor about “potential violations of statutory law and due process.”

The email flagged ICE detaining an unaccompanied minor after he left her courtroom. She also says she had objected to a spring 2025 order to grant every ICE venue-change motion. Complaint: a supervisor said “the White House was watching the issue.”

Claims include the Whistleblower Protection Act. EOIR has dismissed 100-plus judges since January 2025. These are allegations. DOJ has not answered this complaint in court yet.
