Alabama Gov. Ivey Commutes Toforest Johnson's Death Sentence, Citing 'Not Enough Direct Evidence'
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey commuted Toforest Johnson's death sentence to life without parole Tuesday, saying there was "not enough direct evidence to carry out the most serious punishment" in the 1995 killing of Deputy Sheriff William Hardy. The move came over the objection of Attorney General Steve Marshall; Johnson's lawyers say they will keep fighting for a new trial.
