Treasury Says It Found $270 Million in Suspicious Activity Tied to Student Aid Fraud, Refers 'Ghost Student' Leads to Investigators
Treasury says its financial crimes unit has found about $270 million in suspicious activity potentially linked to federal student aid fraud, including "ghost student" schemes that enroll fake students with stolen identities. Banks filed nearly 100 suspicious activity reports since a July alert, flagging more than 20,000 transactions, and the leads have gone to investigators. Treasury says the figure is not a full measure of the problem.
