Inspector General: Coast Guard Cutters' Fire Systems Went Off on Their Own at Least 22 Times, So the Automatic Feature Was Switched Off
The Coast Guard's patrol cutters had fire systems that went off on their own at least 22 times, killing the engines. The fix: zip-tie the system so it can't fire automatically, which means a crew member would have to climb down a hatch to fight an engine fire. A new inspector general report also found a third of the fleet wasn't fully mission capable, and one cutter broke down mid-pursuit and let a suspected smuggling boat escape.
