The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office will take part in the Drug Enforcement Administration's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 24, Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced Tuesday.

Residents can drop off expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications in front of the Ocean County Library at 101 Washington St. in Toms River between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., the office said in a press release.

What Take Back Day Will Accept

The site will accept tablets, capsules, patches and other solid forms of prescription medication. Vaping devices will be accepted if their lithium batteries have been removed. Liquids, syringes and illegal drugs will not be accepted, according to the release.

A National Effort

The DEA has held Take Back Day twice a year since 2010. The prosecutor's office said the DEA and its law enforcement partners have collected 21 million pounds of medication since the program began.

At the last event, on April 25, 2026, the public turned in 642,410 pounds of medication at 4,417 collection sites run with 4,306 community partners nationwide, according to the release.

"Take Back Day is an effective tool in reducing the availability of unused medication and prescription drugs. I encourage all of our residents to take advantage of this opportunity to turn these items over to law enforcement," Billhimer said in the statement.

Other collection sites can be found through the DEA's Take Back Day locator.
