One person was killed and more than 20 others were hurt in three shootings near college crowds in Alabama, Delaware and Indiana between Saturday evening and early Sunday, according to police in each city.

The shootings came hours apart on Halloween weekend: outside Legion Field in Birmingham after the Magic City Classic football game, on Main Street in Newark, Delaware, near the University of Delaware, and on Kirkwood Avenue in Bloomington, Indiana, three blocks from Indiana University during homecoming weekend. Police have not said the shootings are connected, and no one has been charged in any of them as of Sunday morning.

One Killed in Shooting Outside Legion Field

Birmingham police said officers responded shortly after 7:50 p.m. Saturday to the 400 block of Graymont Avenue West, near Legion Field, where they found nine people who had been shot. One person was pronounced dead. Police Chief Michael Pickett said one victim was in critical condition and seven were stable, ABC 33/40 reported.

The shooting followed the 85th Magic City Classic between Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University, an annual game between two historically Black universities that draws more than 100,000 fans. Pickett said most spectators had left the stadium property and the gunfire broke out nearby, where vendors were set up along Graymont Avenue.

Officer De'Rell Freeman, a police spokesman, said one person was detained and taken to police headquarters for processing, and that officers recovered multiple firearms at the scene. Police have not said whether that person will be charged or what led to the shooting. The department canceled all remaining tailgating, said it is working with the FBI and asked anyone with video to send it in. Mayor Randall Woodfin said "there is no argument, no beef, no misunderstanding that can justify this level of senseless violence during a night of celebration."

Six Shot on Newark's Main Street

In Delaware, six people were shot at about 11:13 p.m. Saturday on the south sidewalk of East Main Street, across from Choate Street, in downtown Newark, according to an update from the Newark Police Department. Witnesses told local reporters the street was packed with people in Halloween costumes when the shots were fired.

The Newark Police Department said the shooting sent all six victims to local hospitals and that detectives are still working to determine what happened. Main Street was closed for about five hours. The University of Delaware sent an emergency alert just before 11:30 p.m. telling people to avoid the area. Police have not released the victims' conditions or any information about a suspect, and they are asking anyone with video or photos to submit it.

Shooting on Kirkwood Avenue in Bloomington

A little over two hours later, at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Bloomington officers heard "multiple gunshots" in a large crowd near Kirkwood Avenue and Grant Street, a popular student nightlife strip, and saw a man with a gun running from the scene, Deputy Police Chief Ryan Pedigo said, according to the New York Post and WTHR.

At least seven people were hurt. Pedigo said no deaths had been reported and the victims' conditions were not yet known. Police took one person into custody and found a gun nearby, but Pedigo said investigators did not yet know whether that person was the shooter. WTHR reported that a fight in the crowd is believed to have broken out just before the shots.

The counts in all three cities could change as police update them.
