Social Security Says It Corrected Nearly 50 Million Records in Largest Cleanup in Its History

The Social Security Administration says it has corrected nearly 50 million Social Security number records since President Donald Trump took office in January 2025, calling it the largest cleanup of its records in the agency's history.

The agency said Tuesday that it has corrected almost 15% of all active Social Security numbers for U.S. citizens, out of about 330 million, Fox Business reported. The agency's release calls the effort "the most comprehensive SSN record clean-up in the agency's 91-year history."

What the Agency Changed

The agency said it added 17 million dates of death to records that had been missing them, using data from the State Department and its own systems, according to the release.

It also updated about 25 million records that lacked citizenship information, using the Department of Homeland Security's Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements service, known as SAVE, NOTUS reported. The agency says it is now correcting another 8.5 million records with inaccurate citizenship status.

Why the Agency Says It Matters

Social Security numbers are tied to federal benefits, and federal agencies and states use the records to verify identities, the agency said. It describes the cleanup as part of an effort to prevent fraud across federal programs.

"The Social Security Number database is our country's books and records. The database's accuracy is essential to maintaining integrity of government services for citizens," Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano said in a statement. "Accurate SSN records prevent fraud across federal programs and support the proper administration of benefits."

"This is the first time SSA has undertaken an effort of this scale," Bisignano added, according to Fox Business.

Earlier this year, the Treasury Department said it used Social Security death records to stop roughly $99 million in payments that had been set to go to dead people, Fox Business reported.

What the Agency Did Not Say

The agency's announcement did not say whether the corrections uncovered fraud or stopped improper payments, or how much money they may have saved, NOTUS reported.

In February 2025, Trump and Elon Musk said millions of people in the government's databases were improperly getting Social Security checks. The agency's then-acting commissioner later said many of those people were listed in historical records without a death date and were not necessarily receiving benefits, according to NOTUS.

The updated records also connect to the administration's push for citizenship checks, NOTUS reported, noting that SAVE was recently expanded to include Social Security records for federal and state officials to use.
