Child and Adult Killed After Truck Drives Onto Soccer Field at Wichita Sports Complex; Driver in Custody, Police Say
A child and an adult were killed and several other people were hurt Saturday afternoon when a vehicle drove onto a soccer field at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, police said.
The driver was taken into custody, and there is no ongoing threat to the public, Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses said at a news briefing. “This is a tragedy,” Moses said, according to Fox News Digital.
Sedgwick County 911 dispatchers began receiving multiple calls around 3:25 p.m. reporting that a vehicle had driven through a soccer game at the complex, near 29th and Greenwich, Moses said, according to KWCH-TV. Two people were pronounced dead at the scene and several others were taken to area hospitals, police said. Their conditions were not released.
The victims, a child and an adult, have not been identified, according to police.
WHAT POLICE HAVE CONFIRMED ABOUT THE WICHITA SPORTS COMPLEX CRASH
Moses said two juveniles were inside the vehicle, a black truck, at the time, KWCH reported. He did not say what happened to them. The vehicle remained at the scene.
Moses said he did not know how fast the truck was going or how it got onto the field, and that those details remain under investigation, KWCH reported. Authorities have not said whether the driver acted intentionally, Fox News Digital reported. In an update Saturday evening, Moses said the driver is a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas, who had a valid driver’s license and remains in police custody, KWCH reported; police said she had a child playing soccer at the complex, but not on the field where the crash happened. Police said the two people killed were a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, both from McPherson, who were not related, and that 11 other people were taken to hospitals with traumatic injuries. The driver has not been named, and no charges had been announced as of Saturday evening.
A witness told KWCH that a “black pickup truck came plowing through the youth soccer fields hitting multiple people before stopping 100-200 yards down the fields,” KCTV5 reported. Police have not released their own account of the truck’s path.
Wichita police, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, the Bel Aire Police Department, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Wichita Fire Department and Sedgwick County EMS were among the agencies that responded, according to Fox News Digital.
POLICE ASK FOR VIDEO
Investigators are asking anyone with video of the incident to submit it through the department’s online portal. “Regardless of how significant you believe your footage may be, we encourage you to submit it. Even the smallest detail could assist investigators,” the Wichita Police Department said, according to KWCH.

Police said the investigation is in its early stages.
STATE TOURNAMENT HALTED
The crash happened next to a field where the Kansas State High School Activities Association was holding its first-ever girls flag football state tournament. The association suspended play, including a third-place game in progress and the 5 p.m. championship game, and said games would not resume this weekend, according to Fox News Digital and KCTV5. New game times will be announced later.
The Shawnee Mission School District, whose two teams were playing on the adjacent field, said its players and staff are all accounted for. That field was “separated by fencing and gated entrance,” the district said, according to KCTV5. Student athletes, coaches and spectators were told to leave and were directed off the property by the Kansas Highway Patrol and Wichita police.
The City of Wichita canceled all events at the complex until further notice. “We ask that you keep all individuals and families affected in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” the city said, according to KWCH. Wichita’s mayor said in a statement: “I’m heartbroken by reports of a tragic incident at Stryker Sports Complex. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, especially the children and families involved.”
This is a developing story.
